Removing Spilt Wax From Carpet – The DYI Guide

With winter well and truly set in, a nice relaxing night might look a little bit like this – Netflix, red wine and candles.  With red wine being a big culprit when it comes to staining carpets, many people will try to take great care as to not spill it.  Candle wax on the other hand, is quite often overlooked, and it’s not until you’ve spilt candle wax on your carpet that you realise how annoying it is to remove.

Dedicated to those that have had their relaxing night of movies and scented candles rudely interrupted from candle wax making its way to the carpet, we’ve put together a simple DYI guide for removing spilt wax from carpet.

Removing Spilt Wax from Carpets

1. Cool things down a little

After having spilt wax on your carpet, the first thing you should do is to attempt to freeze the wax. Make it as cold as possible by applying a bag or ice or even a packet of frozen peas (keep the peas inside the packet!)

2. Try to scrape the wax off

After the wax has completely solidified it’s time to try and remove it with a knife.  Please take care when doing this as to avoid cutting yourself or damaging your carpets.  If you can’t get it all off, don’t worry as it’ll be covered in step 3.

3. Time to heat things up

With high-quality paper towel or cloth towel, gently go over the material with a warm iron whilst covering the spilt wax.  The goal here is to soak the remainder of the wax up in the towel or cloth.  Be gentle when doing this -you should also try moving the material around with the iron a little.

4. Remove the stains

With a damp cloth, gently go over the carpet to remove any excess residue.  If you find this isn’t working you can try repeating the steps above before vacuuming over the surface to make it smooth again.
